Advanced Nature School - Science in Nature (chemistry and microbiology)
I am so excited to offer advanced nature classes for the older kiddos.
Step into the world of nature like never before in this immersive 5-class science experience! Designed for students aged 10 and up, this outdoor-only course provides an exciting opportunity to explore biology and chemistry in their natural environments. Over the course of five engaging sessions, students will venture outdoors to study ponds, streams, and soil ecosystems, analyzing microorganisms and determining the chemical makeup of each sample they collect.
This is an interactive, hands-on learning experience where students will get a true sense of being a field scientist. Armed with basic scientific tools, they'll gather samples, use microscopes, perform chemical tests, and make fascinating discoveries in the great outdoors.
Key Learning Objectives:
Explore Microorganisms in Nature: Understand the life forms thriving in ponds, streams, and soil, and learn how they contribute to ecological health.
Study Basic Biology & Chemistry: Learn fundamental biology concepts like ecosystems and cells, alongside key chemistry principles such as pH, minerals, and water chemistry.
Develop Field Research Skills: Gain hands-on experience in collecting samples, conducting experiments, and analyzing data in real-world settings.
Discover Environmental Interactions: Learn how microorganisms and chemical composition affect the health of natural environments.
Engage in Outdoor Learning: Participate in fully outdoor classes, immersing students in nature as they observe, analyze, and interact with the environment.
What’s Included:
Fully Outdoor Classes: Students will be outside for each session, working hands-on with nature in real-world field settings.
Fieldwork Equipment: Access to microscopes, sample containers, chemical testing kits, and other scientific tools.
Guided Instruction: Instructor educated in fields of chemistry, biology and toxicology leading students through each stage of the process, ensuring they develop a deep understanding of both biology and chemistry.
Take-Home Resources: Students will receive course materials, including a field journal, data analysis sheets, and a quick-reference guide for identifying microorganisms and testing water/soil.
Who Should Enroll:
Students aged 10 and up with an interest in science and the natural world.
Aspiring young scientists who want to get hands-on experience in biology and chemistry.
Outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers eager to understand the science behind ecosystems.
This class will take place once a month on Thurdays’s at 10am April -August. Each class will last about 2 hours.
The location will be Gorman Nature Center 2295 Lexington Ave, Mansfield, OH 44906
Tentative Dates are as follows:
4/10, 5/15, 6/19, 7/24, 8/14
These dates could change due to storms or illness, there will be a makeup date should that occur.
All science material will be provided However I recommend a lab notebook (journal or comp book) and writing, coloring materials
This is not a drop off class. Parents must stay on site. You can join in with class (many parents enjoy my classes as well) or do your own thing around the Nature Center but you must remain there. If you would like to join and have kiddos under 10 I am happy to provide coloring pages or other activities for them too or they may play in the wooded play area by the pavilion. Please let me know if this is the case so I am prepared.
A private Facebook group and remind app will be used for communication within the group.
For more questions please email me at jenniferrosepeyton@gmail.com
Cost is per child.
